Some Broome County drivers are getting a price break on gasoline as Byrne Dairy & Deli opens another convenience store in the Binghamton area.

The latest operation is on Route 11 in Whitney Point. It's the Syracuse-based company's fourth outlet in the county.

The new store opened for business a few days ago. Customers who have a Byrne membership card are able to buy gas for $2.99 a gallon through January 12.

The special price is offered as a grand opening price promotion. When the first Broome County Byrne Dairy & Deli store opened in Endicott in May 2022, the discounted price was $3.99 a gallon. That occurred as area gasoline prices were soaring to record-high levels of around $5 a gallon.

The new Whitney Point store is about 900 square feet larger than the three other Byrne units around Broome County. A car wash has been built next to the store. It's expected to be operational in about two weeks.

Byrne operates more than 70 convenience stores in upstate New York. In Broome County, in addition to the Whitney Point and Endicott locations, it operates stores on Watson Boulevard in Endwell and on Front Street in the town of Chenango.

The company is expected to continue adding stores this year. Byrne vice president Christian Brunelle said there are no plans for more units in the Binghamton area "at this moment."

Byrne Dairy & Deli stores now are competing with other Broome County convenience stores, including Mirabito and Speedway. Ironically, when a reporter visited the new Byrne store in Whitney Point on Tuesday, its gas tanks were being filled by a Mirabito tanker.
