63-Year-Old Sunrise Terrace Community Center to be Torn Down

A town of Dickinson building that has served as a neighborhood gathering spot since 1956 will soon be demolished.

The Sunrise Terrace Community Center building has been closed for almost two years because of structural concerns linked to a settling foundation.

Town supervisor Michael Marinaccio said the decision to tear down the facility was made after testing revealed the soil at the site is extremely unstable.

Marinaccio said it could take at least $200,000 to address the soil issues before starting the extensive work needed to make the building usable.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, the supervisor said the structure could be torn down before the end of the year.

Marinaccio said the few items inside the building which are salvageable will be stored.

Once the structure has been demolished, the site will be graded and turned into a park-like setting.

A committee will be established to develop a long-term plan for the property on Terrace Drive.
