Stay Safe And Warm: Binghamton Urges Precautions Against Frozen Pipes
When you hear of a National Weather Service Cold Weather Advisory from us on the radio, odds are it's most likely January or February. The latest begins at midnight on Monday, January 20th, and continues until noon on Wednesday, January 22nd.
Both humans and pets need to stay safe during these extremely cold temperatures. Keep your pets inside, except when they, well, you know.
On Sunday, Binghamton Mayor Jared M. Kraham urged residents, and this applies to every local community, to take measures to prevent frozen pipes. I spoke with my mother over the weekend, and she already has been dealing with a frozen pipe in the kitchen.
Mayor Kraham notes that pipes that are located in unheated interior areas most likely will be the most vulnerable. He adds that pipes that run against exterior walls where there is little to no insulation are subject to freeze frequently.
With forecasters calling for Arctic air moving into the area early this week, I’m reminding residents to be proactive about preventing frozen pipes in their homes and businesses. A handful of simple steps can protect against the costly property damage and headaches that can happen when pipes freeze.” - Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham

Mayor Kraham notes that the American Red Cross has smart tips to help prevent frozen pipes, as follows:
- Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
- When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.
- Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
- If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, and set it to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
