A Chenango County resident is dead following a fire that broke out in a garage.

Authorities say 87-year-old Lloyd Darling of Bainbridge died as the result of the blaze that occurred Friday afternoon.

According to New York State Police, a trooper was sent to the scene on County Highway 38 after the fire was reported by people who were nearby.

Investigators say one person used fire extinguishers to try to knock down the flames. The trooper used an extinguisher from his vehicle to put out the main fire inside the garage.

Firefighters from Bainbridge, Guilford and Sidney extinguished the rest of the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
