Spray-Paint Vandals Target Binghamton War Memorials

Binghamton memorial sites honoring war veterans have been vandalized with graffiti.

City police have reported no arrests in connection with the incidents, which apparently happened earlier this month.

The base of the Skirmisher, a monument to those who served in the Spanish-American War, was marked with a message scrawled with black spray paint. The monument is on the north end of the Washington Street bridge.

A plaque a short distance to the west - at Confluence Park - honoring the army of General James Clinton also has been vandalized. Soldiers are said to have camped near the site in 1779.

A memorial near the bridge at Conklin Avenue at the South Side Veterans Park has been marked with graffiti.

Police last week were investigating spray-painted messages and symbols on walls along the Chenango River near the DoubleTree Hotel and the Clinton Street bridge.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David and city police chief Joseph Zikuski did not return calls seeking information on the vandalism incidents.
