Long-Time Binghamton Shop Transformed Into Convenience Store

A building that had been home to a family-owned business on Binghamton's West Side for 42 years is about to get a new life.

A convenience store is expected to open soon at 229 Main Street. The site, which is one block east of Glenwood Avenue, previously was occupied by Binghamton Fluorescent. That store closed when its owner, Andrew Shuman, retired about three years ago.

The property was acquired for $480,000 last year. Tony Singh of Vestal received permission from the city planning commission to open a convenience store and gas station at the site.

This won't be the first vehicle fueling facility to operate on the property. The site had been occupied by an Esso gas station from 1942 to 1977.

The former Binghamton Fluorescent store was gutted last summer. The interior and exterior of the building were completely renovated over the past several months.

Gasoline storage tanks were buried on the site last September. The store, which will be called Eagle Mart, will sell Citgo branded gas.

Workers have been putting the finishing touches on the business in recent days. The convenience store is expected to open in the next week or two.
