Another iconic eatery in the Binghamton area is winding down operations after several decades.

The Spot Diner Restaurant on Upper Front Street in the town of Chenango will be closing its doors this month.

The Spot has been popular with Broome County residents and travelers since the 1960s.

Owner Spyros Dimatos told WNBF News that the decision to close was "painful." He said "it's obviously not something we wanted to do" but it was necessary because of business conditions.

Dimatos said all of the expenses associated with running the restaurant were continuing to rise. The Covid-19 pandemic had a big impact on business and things never fully recovered.

A closing date has not been determined but Dimatos said it won't be long before The Spot shuts down. He said he's committed to keeping the place operating at least through Columbus Day - next Monday.

One employee said "the past few days have been rough" as workers received word of what was happening.

Owners of Tesla vehicles often stop at The Spot while traveling through the Binghamton area to take advantage of the Supercharger installation in the parking lot.

The restaurant property - which includes about two-and-a-half acres of land - is listed for sale. The asking price for the site is $1 million.

Dimatos said he'd quietly been seeking a buyer over the past couple of years. He said the location and size of the property make it attractive for redevelopment.

This story was updated to include comments from the restaurant owner.
