Special Prosecutor to Handle Former Broome D.A. Corruption Case

A special prosecutor will have to be assigned to a case in which a former Broome County district Attorney is accused of public corruption.

Supreme Court Justice Donald Cerio of Madison County this week determined having the current District Attorney, Michael Korchak, handle the case against his former boss, Stephen Cornwell, would constitute a conflict of interest.

Cornwell and an assistant in the D.A.’s office, James Worhach, are accused of submitting false vouchers and altering computer data in order to misdirect funds intended for witness expenses.

According to court documents following the indictments unsealed in July, Cornwell’s office is accused of misdirecting money in the department to cover the cost of staff parking at the Holiday Inn parking lot from October 2016 through December 2019.
