Southern Tier Walgreens Pharmacy “Permanently” Closed
A Walgreens pharmacy in one Southern Tier store has been closed due to reported staffing issues.
A sign at the entrance to the Walgreens store at 153 Main Street in the village of Owego states "Pharmacy Closed Permanently."
The pharmacy was closed for several weeks during the summer. In August, WBNG reported Walgreens had provided a statement indicating the company was "working diligently to reopen the pharmacy as soon as possible."
But Walgreens apparently was unable to hire a pharmacist to staff the location. A sign indicating the pharmacy was shut down permanently was put in place Monday evening.
A Walgreens employee said the delay in bringing on a new pharmacist meant all pharmacy-related signage had to be removed from the site due to state regulations.
The employee said although the store sign indicated the pharmacy closing was permanent, the company was hoping to reopen it. The retail store in Owego remained open.
The Walgreens website continues to show job opportunities for pharmacists and a pharmacy manager at the Owego location.
Walgreens closed its store on Main Street in Johnson City without advance notice to customers last November.
The company last week announced plans to close 1,200 stores over the next three years.
The Walgreens corporate communications office did not return a call seeking comment on the future of the company's Binghamton-area locations.
