Customers at the Wegmans store in Johnson City will soon notice several self-checkout registers replacing a few traditional checkout lanes.

Construction work to install six self-checkout lanes at the Harry L. Drive store began this week.

Wegmans spokeswoman Marcie Rivera said the project is expected to be completed by the end of next week.

Many of the Rochester-based supermarket chain's 101 stores already have self-checkout lanes. Rivera said the decision to add self-checkouts at the Johnson City store "was in motion before the COVID-19 pandemic hit."

Rivera said the addition of self-checkout registers "will not have an impact on staffing at the store." She said the store now is hiring cashiers.

Customers will have the option to use the Wegmans "SCAN" app when utilizing the self-checkout lanes.
