Security Mutual Life, UAlbany and BU Men Help Sock Out Cancer
Security Mutual Life, the Binghamton Bearcats and Albany Great Danes teamed up to help fight cancer on Wednesday night at the SEFCU Arena on Sock Out Cancer Night. The Great Danes hosted the Binghamton Bearcats in men's basketball to help in the battle against cancer. Sock Out Cancer, LLC is wholly owned by the Security Mutual Life Foundation which is a New York 501 (c) (3) public charity and based in Binghamton.
Security Mutual Life Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Boyea and President and Chief Operating Officer Kirk Gravely brought the concept to Albany and UAlbany joined in to help. Started in Binghamton and enthusiastically supported by Boyea who reached out to bring the Sock Out Cancer Night to Albany proceeds from the event provide basic financial support including transportation and food to individuals with cancer.
Sock Out Cancer features multicolored socks worn to bring attention to the fight against cancer. Players, coaches and staff members wore the socks which come with 26 different colors on them, symbolic of the 26 types of cancer. The all-volunteer project members partnered with the foundations at St. Peter's Hospital and Albany Medical Center to split proceeds from the sale of the colorful socks. Sock Out Cancer socks are $10 per pair with half of that money going to those hospitals.

Similar nights are scheduled on Friday at Siena and on Thursday, February 20 at Binghamton University when the BU men host UMass Lowell at the Events Center.
