Police looking for David Sweat and Richard Matt stopped thousands of vehicles and searched wooded areas of Allegany County over the weekend but turned up no sign of the prison escapees.

The search focused on an area of Interstate 86 near Friendship and Amity after a woman told authorities Saturday afternoon she saw two men who matched the description of Sweat and Matt.

About 300 law enforcement officers searched on the ground and from the air but found no evidence the men were in the area.

Late Sunday, state police said the Allegany County search had ended. Investigators were shifting their attention back to the area near the Clinton Correctional Facility. The convicted killer escaped from the maximum-security prison in Dannemora on June 6.

Police say people who spot someone they believe may be Sweat or Matt should call 911 immediately.
