Scammers Tell Southern Tier Residents to Buy Gift Cards to Keep Kid Out of Jail
New York State Police in the region are warning the public of another reappearance of a persistent phone scam.
Troopers in Oneonta have received reports of a phone scam that claims that the recipient's son has been involved in an accident and tells the would-be victim they need to buy pe-paid Google cards and provide the personal identification code for the cards to the caller in order to keep the son out of jail. The caller usually doesn’t stop there and later requests more money.
Authorities say anyone who receives a call like this should try to contact their loved one directly and, if that isn’t possible, call police immediately. Police Officers say just a quick phone call, if not to the relative but to police, could prevent victims from paying out hundreds and thousands of dollars to criminals.
No law enforcement or legal organization will ever call someone demanding payment or ask for personal or financial information to resolve a case.
