Broome County Emergency communications reported a lot of debris scattered on the highway including “a large bucket from an excavator” in the center and left lanes.

Emergency Services officials say they believe the large bucket fell off a semi that had been traveling down the highway and the passenger vehicle either swerved to avoid the hazard or hit some of the debris, causing to roll over.

The Department of Transportation was called in at around 4:35 to assist in closing some eastbound lanes of Route 17 but the right-hand driving lane traffic was maintained.

Lanes reopened about an hour and a half later.

A car reportedly involved in the crash was said to be on its roof.  The occupant of that vehicle had complained of some neck or back pain but was out of the vehicle and mobile at the scene.

The initial call had indicated a tractor trailer may have also been involved in the collision but later moved on from the scene.

Police officials had not officially listed what may have caused the car to roll over or what caused the excavator bucket to end up in the road.

There have been no reports of tickets issued in the incident and its unclear what amount of damage may have been caused to the pavement.

Road conditions are dry and the weather overnight has been clear with no visibility issues and no fog.

In addition to law enforcement personnel, crews from the Johnson City Fire Department were also dispatched to the scene.
