Retiring Transportation Spokesman Dave Hamburg on Southern Tier Close Up
From radio to radials hitting the roadways, retiring New York State Department of transportation spokesman Dave Hamburg has a lot in his rear-view mirror as he moves on to the next chapter of his life.
Speaking on the weekly, local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up, Hamburg reflects on the progress of transportation projects in Region 9, most notably the long-term construction on State Route 17/ Interstate 81 in Binghamton known in D.O.T. circles as "The Prospect Mountain Project." Hamburg says, region 9, however, is much more, covering 6,238 square miles including Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Tioga Counties.
Dave wasn't always speaking on transportation issues. Binghamton listeners may remember him on their radios as well and he had his own syndicated radio sports program airing in several states with interest abroad.
That broadcast background, Dave says, has left him with a big catalogue of memorable sports stories that will be in an upcoming book he plans to write during his retirement, wedged between traveling and (why not?) relaxing.
In his reflections during his remaining weeks on the job, Hamburg has the highest praise for all those he's known and worked with in the D.O.T., especially former Regional Director, Jack Williams and the countless, dedicated men and women who don the reflective vest in all kinds of weather, on holidays and at all hours to keep the public safe.
Best Wishes, Dave Hamburg! See you around at the next rest area!
Southern Tier Close Up is heard Saturdays at 12:10 p.m., following Joe Stanley and the Law on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
