Be Aware: Ramp & Lane Closures Expected In New York’s Southern Tier
Construction season may be over, but that doesn't necessarily mean that occasional roadwork in the Southern Tier of New York and Northeast Pennsylvania is in hibernation.
According to the New York State Department of Transportation, lane and ramp closures are scheduled to take place during the week of December 9, 2024, along Interstate 81 at Exit 2 in the Town of Kirkwood in Broome County.
The schedule is as follows from the NYS DOT:
- Tuesday, December 10th - The ramp from westbound Interstate 86/State Route 17 to southbound Interstate 81 will be closed from 7 a.m. until about 5 p.m.
- Wednesday, December 11th - The Interstate 81 northbound Exit 2W off-ramp to U.S. Route 11 will be closed from 7 a.m. until about 5 p.m.
- Thursday, December 12th - The left lane of Interstate 81 southbound will be closed at Exit 2 from 7 a.m. until about 5 p.m.
- Friday, December 13th - The left lane of Interstate 81 northbound will be closed at Exit 2 from 7 a.m. until about 5 p.m.
The New York State Department of Transportation notes that these closures the week of December 9th are a necessity to facilitate an ongoing bridge rehabilitation project.
Motorists on these routes can expect detours posted for all the ramp closures, along with messaging alerting drivers about the work zone on the highway and signed detours in place.

As is always the case with road construction projects, all roadwork projects are weather-dependent and subject to change based on conditions.
The NYS DOT asks that all motorists slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Remember, in New York State, fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone and convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver's license.
