Road work and construction season have begun. Recently on a trip I took to Maryland, I passed through several construction zones through Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.

The same is beginning throughout New York State as well. This week, the announcement was made by the New York State Department of Transportation that lane reductions have been implemented on Interstate 86 in Apalachin and Vestal as crews set up new traffic patterns which will be put into use in April.

Eastbound traffic will be crossed over to the westbound side of the highway starting April 1st. For more information, read the article HERE.

Tuesday, March 18h, according to the NYS DOT, the westbound State Route 17 in the Town of Sanford, Broome County closed to facilitate a culvert replacement. That stretch of State Route 17 is expected to last two weeks, weather permitting.

The DOT advises motorists to follow the posted detour utilizing Exit 83, left onto Broome County Route 28 westbound for half a mile, then left back onto State Route 17.

And here is something you will want to be aware of for Sunday, March 23rd. According to the New York State Department of Transportation, there will be brief lane and ramp closures on Interstate 81 in Broome County between 6:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.  The NYS DOT is installing mileage-based exit signs along the highway.

Closures should last for approximately 30 minutes and will take place at the following locations, weather permitting:

  • Interstate 81 Southbound at Exit 5 – Front Street in the Town of Dickinson.
  • Interstate 81 Northbound at Exit 6 – U.S. Route 11/State Route 12 in the Town of Chenango.
  • Interstate 81 Northbound at Exit 2 – Interstate 86 in the Town of Kirkwood.

The NYS DOT reminds motorists to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver's license. Lives are on the line. Please slow down and move over for highway workers.
