Investigators believe a man who drove the wrong way on Interstate 88 for seven miles was impaired by drugs.

New York State Police say 72-year-old Steven Wiedeman of Otego was arrested after several motorists were forced off the highway because a vehicle was traveling east in the westbound lanes.

Authorities say the incident happened around midday Friday near the city of Oneonta.

A state police investigator tried to stop the wrong-way vehicle. After nearly seven miles, the drive pulled over near the exit for Emmons and West Davenport.

Drivers took evasive action to avoid colliding with the vehicle that was headed in the wrong direction on I-88.

Police determined Wiedeman was impaired. He was charged with driving while impaired by drugs. The type of drugs were not disclosed by investigators.

Weideman was ordered to appear in Oneonta city court on September 28.
