Police Converge on Otsiningo Park After Report of a Man with a Gun
Otsiningo Park in the town of Dickinson was evacuated as police searched for a man who reportedly was carrying a gun.
The Broome County park located just north of the city of Binghamton was suddenly closed late Wednesday afternoon.
Several sheriff's deputies and state troopers responded to the park along the Chenango River to assist county security officers around 4:30 p.m. A law enforcement source Wednesday evening said the reports of an armed person apparently were unfounded.
Law enforcement officers at the park entrance on Bevier Street directed traffic away from the area as additional police arrived.
A Broome County sheriff's deputy prevented people from entering Otsiningo Park North in the town of Chenango.
Several sheriff's deputies left that area around 5:15 p.m. and about a half-dozen state police cars were observed driving away from Bevier Street a short time later. The park remained closed.
Broome County officials did not respond to requests for information about the incident Wednesday evening. But the law enforcement source said the large police presence at Otsiningo was there to check the park.
This story was updated to provide additional information about the park evacuation.
