Highway safety officials say when child seats are properly installed and utilized, deaths of very young children as a result of car crashes can be reduced by up to 71 percent.

Child safety seat checks are being held across the region this week. Local police agencies can provide information about how you can have a safety seat's installation assessed by a certified technician.

State police plan to hold a safety seat check event at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City this weekend.

The event is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Burlington Coat Factory.
