Plattsburgh Man Admits Firing Gun Inside Broome Motel Room

A Plattsburgh, New York man is to be sentenced in January after admitting he fired an unlicensed gun while staying in a motel room on Upper Front Street in the Town of Dickinson on June 11.   

45-year-old Kristopher Duncan Tuesday, November 1 pleaded guilty to felony Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree according to Broome County District Attorney Michael Korchak’s office.

Duncan admitted that he was in a room at the Comfort Inn on Upper Front Steet on June 11 and had an unlicensed, loaded handgun in the room, which he discharged.  No one was injured in the shooting incident. 

D.A. Korchak’s office says Duncan will be sentenced to four years in New York State prison to be followed by five years post-release supervision when he makes his next appearance in Broome County Court.  That appearance for now is tentatively scheduled for January 27, 2023.

According to the D.A.’s office, Duncan had previously been convicted of felony Criminal Contempt in the First Degree in 2017 in his home county: Clinton County in the far northeastern corner of the state near the Canada border. 

Korchak issued a prepared statement which vowed continued aggressive enforcement of gun laws and removal of illegal firearms in the county.  Korchak says “The possession of illegal, unlicensed firearms by felons creates a danger to the public.  Luckily, no one was injured during this incident.” 

There was no information available concerning the incidents leading up to the firing of the weapon in the motel room or what other people were present at the time of the incident.
