Vacant Owego Building May Be Leased by Manufacturing Business
A new manufacturing operation may move into an unused building in Tioga County.
Discussions are underway to finalize a proposed lease for the 161,000-square-foot structure on Route 38 in the town of Owego.
Adam Weitsman acquired the building for $3 million in 2021. He used it for a cryptocurrency mining site for a time before he moved the operation to northern New York.
Weitsman told WNBF News he is preparing to lease the building to a manufacturer. He declined to identify the potential tenant.
Weitsman said "final discussions" are taking place for the lease. He said the issue of parking at the site still must be worked out.
Several dozen tractor-trailers associated with Weitsman's neighboring recycling facility park in a lot on the Route 38 property at night.
Weitsman said he still needs use of the site for overnight parking for his company's trucks. The challenge now is how to provide a sufficient number of parking spaces for the business that wants to use the building.
Weitsman said he did not know how many people might be employed at the proposed manufacturing operation.
The facility was constructed in 1987 for use by SCI Systems. That company shut down the Owego operation about seven years later.
The site later was used by Harvard Custom Manufacturing and Catalyst Manufacturing Services. Catalyst later was acquired by Asteelflash of France. Asteelflash closed its facility in 2014.
