Otsego School Cancels Homecoming Party After “Threat”

A man has been charged with menacing following an incident that resulted in the cancellation of homecoming activities at an Otsego County school.

Authorities say 36-year-old Zachary Boynton of Morris was arrested after three teenagers reported a man pointed a gun at them.

According to New York State Police, the alleged incident happened Friday evening on Main Street in the town of Morris.

Investigators say word of the possible threat quickly circulated throughout the community.

Based on the information available at the time, Morris Central School officials decided to cancel a homecoming party.

Troopers eventually determined the object the teens perceived to be a gun actually was a "blue and green colored toy that launches foam darts."

In addition to three misdemeanor menacing counts, Boynton was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Boyton was ordered to appear in Morris village court on October 7.

Following the arrest, the homecoming activities that had been planned for Friday evening were rescheduled for the following night.
