Authorities say 23-year-old Ryan Card of Cortland was pronounced dead after the car he was driving went off East River Road in the Town of Cortlandville.

State police say the crash happened around 11:24 p.m. on New Year's Day.

Investigators say Card was driving a 2001 Honda Civic that rolled over onto its roof on the shoulder of the roadway. The car went off the road, struck some trees and rolled over down an embankment.

Police say two passengers in the vehicle who were seriously hurt were taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

22-year-old Sheldon Clawson of Cortland sustained several contusions and fractures. 18-year-old Nikiah Hakes of Groton sustained internal injuries. Authorities say Clawson and Hakes both were reported in stable condition.

Police did not say what factors caused the crash.
