NYS Troopers’ Union ‘Outraged’ Over Shooting Suspect’s Release on Bail
The New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association says it is "outraged" a man indicted on charges he tried to kill Trooper Ryan Thorp during the investigation of a domestic incident in Deposit June 23 has been set free on bail.
44-year-old Scott Mawhiney was granted bail as his lawyer argued his actions were out of character and he was not a public threat. The Deposit man pleaded not guilty to attempted first degree murder and other charges while Trooper Thorp continues to recover at home following several surgeries after he was shot in the arm.

Benevolent Association President Thomas Mungeer says the release is “yet another example of the failed social experiment known as bail reform.”
