New York Senator Fred Akshar Posts Bail Reform Survey
As a new state survey shows declining support for New York State’s new bail reforms that do away with requiring many suspects from posting cash bail when arrested for minor offenses, New York State Senator Fred Akshar is taking the question to his Binghamton-area constituents.
The Republican has posted an online survey asking what voters feel about the Bail Reform Law and what, if any changes they think are necessary.
The Senator from Binghamton has been a vocal opponent of the measure prior to its approval by the legislature last year and its implementation on January 1, saying “the law as currently written is a slap in the face to law-abiding citizens.”
Akshar says he wants a full repeal but has also introduced legislation to amend the current measure. That proposal would restore bail for crimes like second degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless assault of a child, aggravated vehicular manslaughter, facilitating a sexual performance of a child, arson, unlawful imprisonment, failure to register as a sex offender, aggravated cruelty to animals, robbery, burglary and hate crimes… among others.
