Canines and their human companions in Broome County can look forward to enjoying a new recreational facility within the next few months.

A dog park will be constructed at the north end of Otsiningo Park in the town of Chenango.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said the project is expected to cost about $200,000. He said the facility will be similar to other dog parks in the Southern Tier.

Garnar said the work is part of the county's park reconstruction initiative.

Otsiningo North is connected to the main park in the town of Dickinson by a walking trail. The entrance is located on Howell Drive, just east of Front Street.

The county will use a $25,000 grant from PetSafe to cover a portion of the cost of developing the dog park.

Garnar said the facility is to be built in an area where there's an unused soccer field. The site is locate near a parking lot.

Construction of the new dog park is expected to be completed by late spring or early summer.
