Several large mausoleums were broken into and the remains of some people may have been taken from a Johnson City cemetery.

Village police chief Brent Dodge said the vandalism at Floral Park Cemetery was reported Saturday morning.

There are entrances to the cemetery from Floral Avenue and Burbank Avenue.

At least five mausoleums were believed to have been damaged in what Dodge described as a "pretty disturbing crime."

The police chief said mausoleums were broken into and remains were disturbed and possibly stolen. He said it appears some items may be missing.

Bronze military grave markers and some copper downspouts were stolen from Calvary Cemetery in Johnson City last January.

Dodge said the case at Floral Park Cemetery is different. He said "this indicates something much, much darker" may be involved.

The police chief asked anyone who lives near the cemetery who may have video that may be useful to the investigation to contact detectives.

Dodge also is urging people who notice suspicious activity near cemeteries to call police immediately.
