Binghamton police are investigating the shooting of two people in a West Side neighborhood near Recreation Park.

Authorities say gunshots were heard in the area of 1 Hayden Street around 6 a.m. Friday.

Acting Police Chief John Ryan said responding officers found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds. They were located near the intersection of Beethoven and Schubert streets, a short distance west of the shooting scene.

Ryan told WNBF News the man sustained very serious gunshot wound injuries to the torso. The injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Ryan said the woman's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Investigators were unable to immediately provide any suspect information.

Streets near the shooting scene were closed while detectives looked for evidence.

Investigators were using a drone to survey the area around the shooting scene. One detective appeared to be using a metal detector to search for evidence in a nearby grassy area.

A woman who live a short distance from the scene said she heard several shots. She said she didn't see anything when she looked out a window of her residence.
