Police are searching for a vehicle that raced away from the scene of a Tompkins County shooting incident.

Authorities say a man sustained a gunshot wound to his back in the shooting that occurred in the town of Newfield.

According to New York State Police, troopers were sent to an apartment house on Shaffer Road after someone reported shots had been fired.

The shooting happened in a parking lot outside the building.

Investigators did not release the name of the man who was injured. He was taken to Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca. He later was transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. His condition was not disclosed.

Police were looking for a dark colored sport utility vehicle that was observed leaving the area just after the shooting. It was traveling south on Shaffer Road.
