A Broome County motel that had operated under a series of owners for more than a half-century has been boarded up.

Aleya Majid, who had owned the property, said Capital One Bank now has taken possession of the Red Carpet Inn in West Endicott after it was acquired during a sheriff's sale.

Majid said she had been unable to make payments owed to the bank. She had been living at the site until the bank took control of the property last week.

Majid expressed disappointment that bank representatives had not shown an interest in negotiating with her attorney. She had hoped that a plan could have been developed that would have allowed her to continue operating the 61-room motel.

Workers boarded up the two-story building at 749 West Main Street and an attached house.

It's not clear what will happen to the property where the motel first opened in 1963.
