JC Wegmans Wraps Up Remodeling – But Stand By for The Burger Bar
A big makeover job at the Wegmans store in Johnson City is virtually complete, just in time for the busiest time of year for food shopping.
Planning for the modernization project began several years ago. A 6,500-square-foot addition last year provided more space for offices and employee services. Demolition and construction work for enhancements throughout the store started last January.
Manager David Orlovsky said almost all of the planned work has been finished, although the scheduled opening of The Burger Bar has been delayed.
The Johnson City store will be the first Wegmans location will a Burger Bar Express. The concept makes some adjustments to the Burger Bars at other Wegmans sites.
The launch of the Burger Bar had been expected in late November but some additional work was needed. Orlovsky now hopes it will be able to open early next year.
One of the most obvious enhancements at the store is a redesigned and expanded Market Café. Seating now is available for more than 200 people. The new design provides a quieter dining area while accommodating larger groups.
A new kitchen offers greater efficiency and flexibility for future needs. New, larger restrooms were built to better serve the thousands of customers who visit the store every day.
Orlovsky acknowledged that some regular Wegmans customers found it challenging when items in the store were moved to other spots throughout the renovation project. But he said those adjustments have to be made occasionally in order to stay current and adjust to changing demand for certain products.
The Johnson City Wegmans store opened on August 19, 1990. It's been updated every several years. The latest renovation project was expected to cost about $12 million.
