Johnson City to Sell Site of Former Philadelphia Sales Store

The Johnson City property where a Philadelphia Sales store operated for nearly four decades is about to go on the market.

The village acquired the four-acre site at 333 Grand Avenue from United Health Services in June of last year as a location for a new public works department facility.

But that plan was dropped when officials decided the old Country Valley Industries building at 60 Lester Avenue would be a better location for the project.

Mayor Greg Deemie on Wednesday said he's received "multiple calls from developers and real estate agents" inquiring about the Grand Avenue property.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Deemie said a request for proposals for the site is being drafted.

The Philadelphia Sales store operated on Grand Avenue from 1959 to 1997. The building that housed the business was demolished in 2006.

The mayor said the village board wants to consider potential development plans for the site to ensure they'll enhance the residential neighborhood.

Johnson City is moving to acquire the Lester Avenue property through the eminent domain process. The site now is owned by an entity that once hoped to use it for a hemp operation. That plan fell through.
