Democratic challenger Christina Charuk held a 13-vote lead over Republican incumbent Martin Meaney in the last count released by the Broome County Board of Elections. Charuk had 1,268 votes and Meaney had 1,255 votes.

Joseph Bertoni, the Republican deputy election commissioner, told WNBF News the manual recount involving four bipartisan teams is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. After the district-by-district results are tabulated, they'll be certified.

Meaney said he plans to attend the recount operation. Charuk said she will be unable to be there during the certification process but she'll have a representative on hand to observe the recount.

Meaney had the initial lead in the tight race on election night with an 11-vote advantage over Charuk. But Charuk wound up ahead after affidavit and mail-in votes were tabulated several days later.

The two candidates have said little publicly while awaiting the certification of the results. But they both spoke during separate live WNBF News interviews on Wednesday.

Charuk and Meaney said they haven't spoken with each other since the election.
