Mystery: No Arrests Six Years After Killing of Johnson City Man
Local, state and federal investigators are continuing to work to find the person who was responsible for the execution-style shooting of a Johnson City resident.
50-year-old Shakeel Khan was killed shortly after he closed his restaurant - Halal Bites - around 10 p.m. March 30, 2019.
The shooting happened in the parking lot of the business at 652 Riverside Drive.
Johnson City police chief Brent Dodge on Wednesday said "it's still an open and active investigation." He told WNBF News his agency has assigned a detective to the case "who is still following up on the occasional potential leads that pop up."
Dodge said the police department investigator "is still collaborating with the FBI very closely."
The police chief said "we're at a point where we're hoping some new information comes in" from the public.
In November 2020, investigators announced a $50,000 was being posted in connection with the case.
The United States State Department has since offered a reward of up to $5 million as part of its Rewards for Justice initiative. The reward is "for information leading to the arrest or conviction any country of any individual who committed, attempted or conspired to commit, or aided or abetted in the commission of the murder of Shakeel Khan."
Despite the substantial reward offer, Dodge said so far there hasn't been "anything tangible enough for us to identify a suspect and establish probable cause to make an arrest yet."
The police chief said investigators are hopeful "that will change at some point." He said "we really want to get justice for Mr. Khan and for his family."
People with information about the case are advised to contact their local FBI office, the nearest American Embassy or Consulate, or you can submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov.
