Johnson City Hotel Ordered Closed by Broome Health Department
The Broome County Health Department has issued an order shutting down a Best Western-brand hotel in Johnson City.
A bright-yellow closure notice is posted in the entrance of the four-story 99-room SureStay Plus Hotel at 569 Harry L. Drive, just east of the Oakdale Mall. The order is dated October 26.
The hotel owner could not be reached for comment but a sign indicated the place would be closed until further notice due to a water line break.
An employee said the ruptured water line supplied the building's sprinkler system. When the line broke, water began filling a hotel electrical room and pouring into the parking lot of a neighboring Friendly's restaurant.
The cost of making the needed repairs had been estimated at $60,000.
The employee who discussed the situation said some hotel booking websites apparently had not been notified of the closure. That's resulted in people who've had room reservations showing up only to discover the place is shut down.
Property records show the hotel was acquired by JSK Lakes LLC for $3.8 million in December 2019.
Best Western International did not respond to a request for comment on the situation at the Johnson City hotel.
