Joey is in the Hunt
Play is underway in the third round of the Dick's Sporting Goods Open at En Joie Golf Course. Scott McCarron and Kevin Sutherland share the lead at 12-under par, two strokes better than Jerry Smith, Corey Pavin and Joey Sindelar who enter the third round at 10-under par.
Horseheads resident Sindelar is an obvious fan favorite. Large galleries of fans follow him every time he plays at En Joie. He is hoping to become the first to win both the B C Open and the Dick's Sporting Goods Open. He won two B C Open crowns, one in 1985 and the other in 1987.
Sindelar's most memorable moment before his home fans came in the final round of the 1985 B C Open when he notched a hole-in-one on the par three number 14 hole. That shot propelled him into the lead over Mike Reid and he continued on to win the tournament.
Sindelar is looking for his first win of the season. To date his best finish is a tie for 11th at the KitchenAid PGA Championship. The 59-year old has earned $163,255 in 14 events prior to this weekend.
Sindelar tees off at 1:24 today (Sunday) in a group with Bernhard Langer and Corey Pavin. News Radio 1290 WNBF will resume coverage from the Dick's Sporting Goods Open following Binghamton Rumble Ponies baseball this afternoon.
