If you have ever tried dating in New York, you know things can change quickly. One minute a date feels great, the next something small completely changes everything. A new study looked at what singles say instantly turns them off, and some of the answers might surprise you.

Money Requests Can Raise Red Flags

One of the biggest complaints involves money. About six out of ten singles said being asked to send money through apps like Venmo or Cash App after a date, without talking about it first, feels like a red flag. Most people say it creates awkward tension and can end interest fast.

Talking About An Ex Is A Mood Killer

Nearly two thirds of singles said bringing up an ex again and again is enough to shut things down right away. It can leave the impression that someone is not ready to move forward.

Dating Photos Matter More Than Ever

Photos also play a big part. More than half of singles said heavily edited or AI generated profile pictures are a turnoff. About four in ten said when someone looks different from their photos in real life, attraction can disappear right away. Honesty matters more than perfect pictures.

Vaping Is Less Of A Big Deal

This one may surprise you. Most singles said vaping is not a major issue when dating. Around two thirds called it either minor or not a problem at all, so attitudes around it may be shifting.

Drug Use Still A Strong Dealbreaker

On the other hand, illegal drug use remains a big concern. More than eight out of ten singles said cocaine or party drug use would end a relationship immediately. Women especially reported strong negative reactions.

What This Means For Dating In New York

Dating anywhere can be tricky, but here in New York where life moves fast, first impressions matter more. Being honest and respectful about expectations can go a long way. Small behaviors might seem harmless, but they can make a big difference in whether there is a second date.
