After a few winters with little amounts of snow, it has not been a good time for those who love to get outdoors and on a snowmobile. Those who are serious about snowmobiling, have loaded up their motorized sleighs on a trailer and headed to the usually snowy northern parts of New York State

But, 2025 has been looking more like the winters we remember. There is nothing quite like the thrill of riding on a snowmobile through a snowy trail in the middle of nowhere. This winter, New York State is offering that fun to snowmobilers from out-of-state with a couple of free snowmobiling weekends.

The Empire State is waiving registration fees for out-of-state snowmobilers on two weekends this winter - February 28th through March 2 and again March 7th through the 9th to take a ride on over 10,000 miles of snowmobile trails in New York State.

New York is home to more than 10,000 miles of snowmobile trails, making it the perfect place to explore everything from snow-peaked mountains and endless forests to pristine valleys and the Great Lakes. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the beauty our state has to offer, and we’re making it easier with free snowmobiling weekends for adventurers to see it for themselves. - New York State Governor Kathy Hochul

Outside of these free weekends, snowmobilers from out-of-state and Canada are required to register their snowmobiles with New York State. For the two free weekends, operators of snowmobiles from of state will need to have proof of registration from their home state or province along with any applicable insurance.
