Well, it's safe to say that the outdoor swimming season is over. Swimming is one of my favorite summer activities, although I have to admit, it's been a while since I have dipped a toe into a pool, lake, creek, river, or any body of water outside of the shower.

If you have a pool, I'm a bit jealous. I'd love to have a pool in my backyard, but instead, I have a small Goldfish pond that takes up most of the small real estate behind my house.

For those of you with pools, this is the time of year to close it up for the season. For those who are not sure the best way to do so, or need a refresher, here are some tips from 21st Century Pools & Spas on the Vestal Parkway, Vestal on how to properly close your pool.

Pool Closure

Be sure that all accessories are out of the pool. Drain all the pool equipment, including pumps, filter, and heater, and ensure water lines are blown out, antifreeze is properly administered, water levels are set correctly depending on pool type, and your pool is covered correctly.

21st Century & Pools notes that damage to pools that aren't properly closed can be extremely costly and with an underground burst line from freezing, it could result in a major repair or need for excavation.

If the job is more than you can handle, or need help, hire a professional to properly close your pool, and avoid potential costs that could result, like a frozen line bursting underground.

Safety Covers

Simply covering your pool with a standard roll-out cover may not be good enough. 21st Century Pools & Spas recommends a safety cover that will protect your pool over winter and also can prevent tragedy as it secures the pool and stops anything from falling in like wildlife, pets, and children. Safety covers are designed to withstand the weight of at least 2 adults and a child.

You can choose from several custom colors of safety covers, and again, if you don't feel comfortable closing up your pool, consult with a professional pool expert. Be safe, and dream about next summer when it's time to jump back in the pool!
