An Erie Community College hockey player will pay a referee’s medical expenses and be sentenced to probation and anger management treatment after pleading guilty to assaulting the referee during the Junior College National Championship at the SUNY Broome Community College Ice Center.

19 year old Brandon Day of Cheektowaga is seen on video jumping out of the penalty box during the final seconds of the game and tackling the referee.  The referee was knocked unconscious and suffered other injuries after being thrown to the ice.

Day also has to pay $525 for damage to the BCC locker room after being ejected.

The Broome County District Attorney said it was amazing the incident didn’t end up with a worse outcome.

The referee is expected to make a statement during Day’s sentencing.
