A Chenango Forks man who died while kayaking apparently suffered a cardiac emergency.

Authorities say 72-year-old Dennis Healey was with a group of people on the Chenango River when his kayak overturned.

A person who called 911 around 6 p.m. Thursday reported three kayakers were in distress.

New York State Police and other emergency agencies responded to the area of the Depot Street fishing access at the fork of the Chenango and Tioughnioga rivers.

Troopers learned that two kayakers had gotten out of the river on their own but a third was unconscious after his boat overturned.

People were performing CPR on the north shore when a trooper and a Broome County sheriff's deputy crossed the river to assist Healey. They were able to bring the man to the south shore where CPR continued.

An ambulance crew took over care. Healey was pronounced dead a short time later.

Investigators say an autopsy concluded Healey likely suffered a cardiac emergency.
