Binghamton McDonald’s Locked Down as Police Swarm Vehicle
There were some tense moments at a Broome County McDonald's restaurant after police surrounded a vehicle that had been sought in connection with a shooting.
Law enforcement agencies in the Binghamton area had been advised to be on the lookout for a gray 2020 Chevrolet sport utility vehicle. A person in the SUV was reported to be a suspect in an Albany area shooting incident.
The vehicle was spotted by police near Main and Jarvis streets shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Broome County sheriff's deputies surrounded the SUV as it pulled into the drive-thru at the McDonald's at 167 Main Street.
Binghamton police and state troopers raced to the restaurant to provide assistance.
After McDonald's employees saw the situation developing, the doors to the business were locked to prevent anyone from entering or leaving.
A witness said several officers surrounded the Suburban at gunpoint and ordered the occupants to slowly get out of the vehicle.
Broome County sheriff's deputies took those who were in the SUV into custody without incident.
The McDonald's restaurant lockdown lasted a short time and normal operations were able to resume.
