Former School Treasurer Accused of Shopping With District Funds
The former treasurer of the Morris Central School District in Otsego County is accused of diverting and stealing at least $22,315 dollars in checks to the school district between 2018 and 2019.
47-year-old Kristina Hand was arrested September 3 by Federal authorities.
She's charged with Federal Program Theft.
The U.S. Attorney’s office says the school district terminated the Morris woman’s employment in February after discovered the theft.
New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, whose office participated in the investigation, issued a statement pointing out that school districts are struggling to make ends meet. He says: “it is disgraceful that Ms. Hand allegedly stole from the district to fund her personal shopping.”
If convicted, Hand could face up to ten years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
