Endwell Residents Fight Project Planned Near Their Neighborhood

People who live in an upscale town of Union neighborhood are expressing opposition to a developer's plans for a nearby site.

Walsh Realty is seeking permission for a proposed project on 30.5 acres of land on Watson Boulevard just west of Country Club Road.

The Vestal-based firm has outlined plans to develop a self-storage facility at the site, which is located near Homestead Village at the Glen, a townhouse community with dozens of residents.

Walsh Realty's proposal also calls for using the site for outdoor vehicle storage and for retail shed sales.

People who live on Eagle Drive have been circulating a petition calling on the town to reject the plan. They contend the project is not suitable for the area.

The town planning board voted 6 to 1 to recommend rejection of the application. Walsh Realty wants the property rezoned from neighborhood commercial to a "planned unit development" district.

Planning board members indicated the site is not an appropriate location for the type of project being proposed. They also expressed concern about its visual impact in the area.

Walsh Realty representatives could not be reached Wednesday afternoon to discuss the company's plans.

The town of Union board has scheduled a public hearing on the proposal for November 16 at 7 p.m. The session will be held at the town hall at 3111 East Main Street in Endwell.
