Finally! Endicott’s Washington Avenue Gets Its Gateway Arches
Construction workers are putting the some of the finishing touches on the $11 million makeover of Washington Avenue in Endicott.
Large "gateway" signs were erected on Tuesday on the street in the heart of the village's business district.
The segments of the arches were delivered recently. The signs are designed to resemble the iconic Square Deal Arch that was constructed on East Main Street in 1920.
Most of the work on the key elements of the massive street reconstruction project were completed a few weeks ago.
The redesigned Washington Avenue includes traffic calming features, new mid-block crosswalks and a bike lane on the west side of the street.
A key element of the project that started last April included the replacement of water and sewer lines, along with the installation of new sidewalks, curbing and landscaping.
In recent weeks, motorists and pedestrians have been adapting to some changes, including the new crosswalk warning lights and the removal of traffic signals at the Monroe Street and Broad Street intersections.
