Endicott’s Once-Bustling Union Business District in Decline
What for decades had been a thriving shopping, office and restaurant section of Endicott has changed dramatically over the last several years.
The Union District has lost its luster as businesses have closed and demographics of the area have evolved.
McCoy's Chophouse restaurant on West Main Street ceased operations last week. Key Bank will close its Union Endicott branch on June 12.
The Corner Drug Store at West Main Street and Nanticoke Avenue shut down last June after being in business for 87 years.
Various other shops and restaurants on Main Street, Nanticoke Avenue and Exchange Avenue have closed over the past decade.
People who live and work in the area have expressed growing concern about the trend. Many have been wondering what, if anything, can be done to bring vacant properties back to life.
Owners of some of the empty storefronts on West Main Street are trying to sell or lease their available space.
The three-story building that had been home to the Corner Drug Store is listed at $475,000. In addition to the commercial space on the ground floor, the listing indicates there are four one-bedroom apartments on the second floor and warehouse space on the third floor.
While some traditional businesses that had operated in the Union District for decades have closed, new enterprises have popped up - among them a gun store and a smoke shop.
Endicott Mayor Nicholas Burlingame did not respond to an email requesting information on what the village is doing to revitalize the Union District.
