Bakery Store in Endicott’s LIttle Italy Neighborhood Taking Break
A popular family-owned retail shop on the North Side of Endicott won't be selling bread or pizza dough as usual.
The operators of Battaglini Bakery say the business will continue to supply items to area grocery stores. But their small walk-up shop at 111 Oak Hill Avenue will be closed for the foreseeable future.
Anthony Battaglini said the store recently had been open for limited hours. It's been operating five days a week for three hours a day.
Battaglini said it's been difficult to find enough people to work in the shop. He said the plan is to "realign operations" and to do some renovations. He told WNBF News "there's no timeline" for when the store will reopen.
Battaglini noted this isn't the first time the shop has been closed. He said it didn't operate for several years between 1974 and 1993.
A steady stream of customers visited the store Thursday afternoon to purchase Italian and French bread, as well as pizza dough.
While they'll miss stopping by the neighborhood shop, they said they were pleased that Battaglini products would continue to be available in local supermarkets.
Early Friday morning, Anthony Battaglini was working with his father 81-year-old father, Joseph, to load bread into a delivery van.
The Battaglini Bakery motto is simple: "Better Baked Bread." The business has been a fixture on Endicott's North Side since 1911.
