A new business has opened on Washington Avenue amid ongoing optimism about plans to revive Endicott's once-vibrant shopping district.

A closed Subway sandwich shop now is filled with a wide array of merchandise in what is being promoted as a "yard sale."

Nearby business operators told WNBF News they didn't know what was going on in the storefront at the corner of Washington Avenue and Monroe Street.

The Subway restaurant suddenly shut down just over a year ago. The place had been quiet until recently when it was stocked with assorted inexpensive items ranging from electronic calculators to book binders and Party Snaps "consumer fireworks."

Small signs posted in the windows of the business suggest it operates from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., although it wasn't open when a reporter visited during those hours.

People in neighboring establishments said they believe the "yard sale" was set up a few weeks ago. They said they've observed only sporadic activity at the site.

A "FOR RENT" sign is posted in the shop window. Messages left with the real estate agent were not returned. Efforts to contact the property owner were unsuccessful.

Endicott Mayor Nick Burlingame could not be reached for comment on the situation.

The village is preparing to spend millions of dollars to revive Washington Avenue and the area surrounding it.
