Endicott Grand Union? Renovation Work Exposes Site of Old Grocery
People passing by a building in the Union District of Endicott in recent days have been surprised by a previously-hidden sign.
When stucco siding was removed from a wall of the large structure at the corner of North Nanticoke Avenue and East Wendell Street, a red-and-black "Grand Union" grocery store logo was exposed.
Many residents of the area didn't know the building had housed a neighborhood supermarket for more than two decades.
Tom Crowley, who owns the property, told WNBF News the old siding was removed as part of a project to renovate the building, which is now used as a storage facility.
Crowley has heard from quite a few people who were surprised to see the "Grand Union" lettering on the building, which he acquired in 2017. It's located across the street from his business, Crowley Fabricating & Machining Company.
Records show the Grand Union store operated at the site from around 1943 until about 1966. It later was home to other businesses including Tamren Tool Company and Triple Cities Linen.
Crowley said the old "Grand Union" markings won't be visible much longer. He said he's planning to have new metal siding installed on the building's wall along East Wendell Street.
